Mineral Wells Fossil Site Project
The Dallas
Paleontological Society is working on a one
of a kind collecting locality in Texas. The
project involves redevelopment of the
a former rock quarry or “borrow pit” used to gather cover material
for a City of Mineral Wells landfill. The quarry will be
redeveloped as a public fossil
collecting site. The
quarry has a significant
amount very collectable Pennsylvanian Age
fossils.
With much
thanks to member Lee Higginbotham, on June
16, 2009, the City of Mineral Wells approved
redevelopment. Redevelopment is contingent
upon funds raised from the private sector.
The DPS has been challenged to raise a minimum of
$10,000
to help cover these costs.
Expenses include signage,
fencing, parking, possible ADA accessibility,
and temporary toilet facilities. We are asking
for members and anyone interested in this
project to make donations for any amount of
money to
assist in creating a fossil park in
Mineral Wells. One dollar from every fossil
collector in Texas, let alone the United
States will meet initial need but will help
with on-going maintenance. Therefore, the
sooner these funds or more are raised, the
sooner this site can become a reality for
the families and children of Texas and for
everyone in the world.
The easiest
way to help is to donate using the PayPal link
at the top of the page. The DPS will also accept checks either at
regular meetings or by mail at:

The DPS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization. Therefore, cancelled checks
and PayPal receipts can be used as tax
deductible charitable donations.
The Dallas
Paleontological Society would like to thank
the following for listening to our concerns
over loosing this important collecting site: Lance Howerton, City Manager, Beth Watson,
Executive Director of the Chamber of
Commerce, and Christina Childs, Tourism
Director.
