4 (Please note the date change. It was originally scheduled for March 28.) The DPS will be going to Decatur, Texas on Saturday, April 4.  We will meet at the McDonald’s at 9:00 AM and proceed to some private ranch property near Decatur.  Typical Cretaceous fossils like ammonites and echinoids are probably plentiful, but no guarantees can be made of what will be found.  The owner says that cactus is also plentiful so you might want to wear long pants and some kind of boots.  The ranch is very large so there should be no lack of space for hunting.  No digging please.  Also, please don’t tease the cattle.  Kids are very welcome but parents must be vigilant for snakes, cactus, and insects that will be present.  Be prepared for probable warm or hot weather so bring sun-screen, hats, and plenty of fluids as well as food for lunch or snacking.

16 The DPS will have a field trip to Jasper, Texas on Saturday.  We will meet at the McDonalds near the intersection of Highways 96 and 190 at 8:00 AM.  All the petrified wood (including possibly some palm wood) you can carry from the time we get there until we leave at about noon will be available at the hunting site.  This could possibly be the last chance we have to get into this plentifully wooded site.  Bring water and maybe a snack.  The creek where we hunt will have some water but it is shallow almost everywhere (depending on your height).  So bring your creek shoes.  The water is cool and clean and the creek bed is sandy not muddy.  Trees provide plenty of shade, but it probably will be hot and humid. It is kid friendly.  There will be charge of $5 per person or $10 a family.
