DPS Heads West

The Dallas Paleontological Society will meet on Wednesday, July 8th, at 7:30 PM Central daylight savings time (note the time change), in the Boonesville Auditorium (Room H125) of the Ellison Miles Building (Building H) at Brookhaven Campus of Dallas College, 3939 Valley View Lane, Farmers Branch.  We are switching back to our original meeting time, 7:30 PM, from now on, to make the commute a little easier.  Roger Farish, longtime DPS member and officer, will speak on the recent DPS Field Trip West.

Roger Farish received his BS degree in Physics / Math in 1966, and moved to Dallas to work for Geophysical Services Inc., the forerunner of Texas Instruments.  He then worked for Mobil Oil in Dallas and Saudi Arabia.  In 1987 he left the energy industry to do investment and financial services until he retired in 2014.  Roger and his wife Linda have been long-time members of DPS and have served in almost every capacity possible.  Roger and Linda collect nearly all kinds of fossils, but focus especially on shark teeth.  Along with Bruce Welton, Roger wrote “The Collector’s Guide to Fossil Sharks and Rays From the Cretaceous of Texas”.  Roger has led many field trips for DPS, including to Lake Texoma, Post Oak Creek in Sherman, cement quarries near Midlothian, Oliver Creek near Justin, and our canoe trip down Denton Creek.  This year he decided to be very ambitious, and with the help of Rick Goldgar, put together a trip to major fossil collection sites, museums. and paleontology parks, in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.  Roger will show pictures from this trip and will bring some of the fossils that they found.

DPS meetings are always free and open to the public.  Anyone interested in fossils is invited.  Members can bring snacks and food to share, and everyone can bring fossils for identification or to show off.  The meeting will be streamed on Zoom at:  https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83096250920.  If the link does not work, start Zoom and enter the meeting ID of 830 9625 0920.  Remember that we will start at 7:30PM, 30 minutes later than before!
